If things had turned out differently, Robert Mapplethorpe could be the most followed person on Instagram, and Vito Russo could run for President... This is the world imagined in Leo Herrera’s fascinating ‘What if?’ utopia The FATHERS Project, a beautiful 'sci-fi doc' that boldly pictures a contemporary gay history where AIDS never existed.

In the weaving together of repurposed archive footage and contemporary snap shots of queer life, The FATHERS Project pushes us as an audience to reflect, hope and dream. By seeing a fantasy of what we could have had, you can’t help mourn the generation lost too soon, and have that fire for change reignited inside your soul. Not every film featuring a good dosage of fisting has the power to make you reflect and grieve for a history we were never allowed, but this one does, and its message lingers long after the credits roll.

After the film we are delighted to be joined by the film’s director Leo Herrera in discussion with Marc Thompson, from PrEPster a London-based HIV prevention organisation, and Roberto Tovar from Número de Serie, an organisation that promotes the use art and design to build new bridges of communication around HIV activism.
