Emily Dickinson is depicted as a hermit spinster by the cis-het male-dominated literary establishment that controlled both history and the publishing of her work (or lack thereof), but Molly Shannon’s star turn as the brilliant, quirky sapphic sister changes everything in this period drama with a difference. Defiant and charming, this version of Emily and her passionate affair with sister-in-law Susan brings new meaning to the verse “I taste a liquor never brewed.”
We’ve known that director-screenwriter Madeleine Olnek can write the most wryly pitch-perfect offbeat comedy since her debut feature Codependent Lesbian Space Alien Seeks Same (2011), and her new film is the most intricately researched, playful, sharp, delicately constructed, intellectual comedy rewriting hidden lesbian history. Illuminated with Dickinson’s own verses, which positively drip sensuality from the screen (She wrote over 1,800 poems, but only 11 were published while she was alive - and these luscious snippets are a far departure from the dry and tragically-highly edited work you may have read in school), this work of fiction is one step closer to reclaiming our erased queer histories.
