Echoes: Three times Mina + Two Times João Liberada
Saturday, 19 September
5.30 PM onwards
The Garden Cinema
Blurring the line between past and present, Two Times João Liberada interrogates the limits of representation, offering a critical look at modern film production and how marginalized figures are portrayed on screen.
João stars in a biopic about Liberada, a gender-nonconforming figure persecuted during the Portuguese Inquisition. Conflicted by the director's intent to adapt Liberada's story as shaped by pain and suffering, João tries to offer a counter-narrative of resilience and rebellion, leading to increasing tensions on set that only deepen as João's dreams become haunted by Liberada's ghost.
The feature will be preceded by Three Times Mina, in which we drift through three nights of performance in Cannes, catching slivers of Mina's life in between rehearsals as she moves from the arms of lovers to the beds of friends.
